Anxiety related to pets

Anxiety related to pets is more common than it may seem. Have you ever found yourself worrying about your pet’s safety, health, or wellbeing, or feeling anxious in anticipation of loss or after a loss? If so, you’re not alone.

Although this relationship can be a source of great joy, it can also involve ups and downs, including challenges that may require support.

Many people find themselves navigating experiences of stress and worry alone, and the emotional impact of this bond is often overlooked.

The anxiety that emerges in your bond with your pet often reflects patterns present in other areas of your life.

Anxiety in your relationship with your pet

Anxiety in the context of the relationship with a pet can take many forms.

Some people find it difficult to be apart from their pet and may begin to experience pet-related separation anxiety. In some cases, even going to work or leaving the house can become a significant source of stress.

In other situations, pets may present behavioral challenges that are difficult to manage, or health issues that bring ongoing worry and emotional strain. These experiences can contribute to heightened anxiety and a sense of being overwhelmed, often accompanied by both physical and psychological symptoms.

At the same time, many people feel alone in these experiences, unsure of who they can talk to about the emotional impact of their relationship with their pet. Although pets are considered family by many, there is still a degree of discomfort or stigma around openly acknowledging this type of anxiety.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand the patterns underlying anxiety, including how they may show up in the relationship with a pet as well as in other areas of life.

This means that, often, when we look at the anxiety we feel in our relationship with our pet, we begin to notice that the same pattern shows up in other areas of our lives, such as in our relationships with friends, family, or even with ourselves.

Working with a therapist who understands the human–animal bond can offer a space where this relationship is taken seriously, validated, and explored with care.

I offer psychotherapy with a focus on the human–animal bond and anxiety, providing online support to individuals in Toronto, North York, and across Ontario.

Seeking Support

Seeking support can be a meaningful, and sometimes difficult, step. You don’t need to have the right words or know where to begin. In therapy, we can explore this together.

Working on anxiety related to your relationship with your pet often also involves exploring how anxiety shows up in other areas of your life. I have experience supporting individuals with anxiety across a range of contexts, allowing us to look at these patterns more broadly.
